A Mountain Bike Road Trip on the Sunshine Coast — by Rideshare!

2023-08-25

Summer is in full swing, which means we’re biking as much as possible.

If you’re wondering why a vehicle-based transportation company is talking to you about mountain biking, it’s because we view ridesharing as a means to something more than just transportation. We’re facilitators of fun — and as bikers ourselves, we know what loamy goodness lies on our doorstep. It’s why we’re proud to offer bike-friendly ridesharing on the Sunshine Coast. With 700 kilometres of trails to bike, stretching right from the ferry terminal to the northern reaches of Lund, there’s more than enough trails to ride. From the ferry terminal to the trailhead, Coastal Rides can seamlessly transport you to every mountain bike on the Coast for a hassle-free bike experience.

Here’s how to plan a four-day mountain bike road trip on the Sunshine Coast by rideshare:

Day 1: Sprockids, Gibsons

Just up the road from Langdale is Sprockids in Gibsons, which features 15-kilometres of trails suitable for all skill levels. A small skills park lets you try out practice loops and stunts and get comfortable hitting features, while a new climb trail lets you access routes further up the mountain in a fun and accessible way. You’ll find everything from downhill options to rolling pumptrack, plus some techier trails and cross-country routes. Popular trails include Doug’s Detention, Fuzzy Hugs, Flume and Pineapple Express. Each run loops back to Sprockids parking lot, making drop-off pre-lap and pick-ups post-ride all the more easier.

Day 2: B&K, Roberts Creek

Hop on a Coastal Rides shuttle and head to Roberts Creek, a laid-back community known for its artistic spirit and one of the best trail networks on the Sunshine Coast. This is pure biking heaven, with 185 (and counting) trails to ride, including everything from jump trails to easy green runs to steep, rocky and rocky sections. B&K is primarily a shuttle-only mountain (unless you’re the kind of biker who likes to climb before you descend), but this is where we come in. You can send lap after lap, thanks to our shuttle service and handy bike rack. Enjoy a day of riding with pals without worrying about who’s turn it is to shuttle, and save on gas and time in favour of pure, adrenaline-inducing, flowy fun.

Day 3: Coast Gravity Park & West Sechelt XC Trails

The trails in West Sechelt are ideal for enduro riders and those looking for fun pedals through the forest. There are roughly 188 trails that loop between rock rolls, tech-y singletrack, and loamy berms. The best part about these trails is the close proximity to Brickers Cider, a natural post-lap stop. Indulge in a well-earned glass or two knowing there’s a designated driver waiting to pick you up and shuttle you back to your accommodation.

Coast Gravity Park: if this is the first you’re hearing of this small rider-designed bikepark, you’re in luck. Here a network of gravity-fed trails caters to riders of all skill levels, including beginners, intermediates, and advanced riders seeking big air and fast descents. Located nearly 10-kilometres outside of Sechelt along Sechelt Inlet, hitch a ride with Coastal Rides to the park and instead, spend the drive getting amped for a day of biking you won’t forget.

Day 4: Halfmoon Bay and Suncoaster

This is where XC trails on the Sunshine Coast got their start. This small(er) trail network has mostly tight, twisty old-school singletrack while recent routes have added some new-school flow. Combine West Sechelt and Halfmoon Bay for a two-for-one biking deal where you’ll get to sample some of the best XC and tech trails the Coast has to offer.

Looking to bikepack instead of descend? The Suncoast Trail is a 37-kilometre-long trail that winds from Egmont at the Southern Sunshine Coast’s northern tip to Halfmoon Bay, through lush forest, along lakes, and to exit points near Sunshine Communities. It’s an out-and-back trail, meaning if you want to skip the return, you can use Coastal Rides to drop you off in Egmont and pick you up in Halfmoon Bay (or vice versa). Plan a post-ride stop at a restaurant, like the Backeddy Pub, or Brickers, and you’ve got a fun day on the bike planned that involves no driving of your own.

Optional: Powell River and Texada Island

We haven’t even covered Powell River and Texada, but suffice it to say, there’s a lot of (biking) ground to cover in this corner of the Sunshine Coast. Coastal Rides has drivers on Texada Island and can shuttle you from one end of the coast to the other, meaning you could easily stretch a biking trip over multiple days and trail networks for maximum fun.
